The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently released DUI and alcohol-related auto accident statistics for 2013. According to the report, 10,076 car accident fatalities involved a driver with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or higher. Of these fatalities, 65% were drivers with a BAC of more than 0.08, 16% were passengers riding with impaired drivers, 11% were occupants of other vehicles, and 8% were non-vehicle occupants. These DUI-related fatalities accounted for 31% of all traffic accident fatalities reported. As expected, the rate of alcohol impairment in drivers involved in these accidents was higher at night and on the weekends.
South Carolina DUI Accident Statistics
In South Carolina, 767 people died in traffic accidents on our roadways. Of those, 335 were considered "alcohol-impaired driving fatalities" – fatalities in which a driver involved had a BAC of 0.08 or more. That accounts for 44% of South Carolina traffic fatalities. That ratio is the highest among all 50 states. For a more in-depth breakdown of South Carolina and national statistics, a link to the DUI-related accident report released by NHTSA is below.
