According to a press release issued by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, five people were killed on South Carolina roadways over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. These numbers reflect car accident fatalites from Friday, May 23, at 6 p.m. until Monday, May 26, at midnight. The unfortunate part of this statistic is that five people lost their lives in car accidents this past weekend. The good news is that this is the lowest amount of fatalities on South Caroilna roadways since 1984. Just last year, the same time period saw twelve car accident related deaths.
As of May 26, 2014, 275 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 286 highway deaths during the same time period last year. At the time of the press release, Charleston County is tied for the 5th most accident related fatalities in the state with 14. Greenville, Lexington, and Horry Counties have experienced the most car accident fatalities with 27, 18, and 17 deaths respectively.
