Friday will began what the South Carolina Highway Patrol calls the "100 Deadly Days of Summer," which spans from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend. During this time authorities say South Carolina sees an increase of car accidents and accident-related fatalities that involve DUI drivers.
Troopers in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorcheseter Counties will step up traffic law enforcement during these 100 days, and as in years past the focus will be driving under the influence (DUI). Television and radio campaigns have already begun to increase awareness of safe driving, focusing on the risks and penalties of DUI.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol reports that so far this year they have made 71 DUI arrests in Charleston County, 119 DUI arrests in Berkeley County, and 115 in Dorchester County. Unfortunately, South Carolina has some of the most dangerous roadways in the nation. Please take extra care this summer as you and your family travel the roads in Charleston and across South Carolina, and think twice before getting behind the wheel while impaired.
