Many insurance companies use extremely complicated computer programs like Allstate’s Colossus program, which have been cutting the costs of claims paid by the insurer at the expense of those injured in an accident. A recent Post and Courier article described how the company could become more efficient if it targeted victims of injuries who didn’t have lawyers. In its “Good Hands” approach, Allstate would pay those unrepresented people within 180 days, which the article stated would take care of 90 percent of the claims. The 10 percent who hired lawyers or didn’t accept claim offers would get the “Boxing Gloves” treatment. In these cases, Allstate would expect to tie up payments for three to five years.
The article goes on to state that Allstate employees testified that they were trained to build rapport with those that have been injured and discourage them from hiring lawyers. The article quoted an industry insider that suggested that the actual “good hands” strategy really and truly involved delaying and denying claims for several months and then making lowball offers as people felt more financial pressure. It was estimated that by using Colossus and other claim-handling programs Allstate could reduce bodily injury payouts by $264 million a year.
