DUI Arrest Turns Deadly In A South Carolina County

Highway Patrol Trooper B.O. Stokes is on administrative duty while investigators examine why he shot and killed a suspect that he described as turning violent during a DUI arrest on July 14, 2012.  Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock says the motorist, Devin Taylor (25), was shot in the chest and abdomen.

The shooting allegedly occurred after Taylor stated struggling with Stokes following a field sobriety test.  The state public safety agency says Stokes tried and failed to stop the attack by using his Taser and was forced to shoot Taylor to protect his life.  The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating the shooting.
