State law-enforcement officials held a press conference last week announcing the beginning of their "Sober or Slammer" campaign, which is aimed at reducing the number of drunk drivers on the roads in South Carolina. Last year, South Carolina law enforcement officers made 28,466 DUI arrests. The "Sober or Slammer" campaign provides for increased DUI enforcement beginning August 17th and running through September 7th.
State officials reported some pretty shocking statistics at the press conference stating that about one person is killed each day in a DUI-related crash in South Carolina. They report that 350 people were killed in South Carolina in drunk driving crashes in 2010. HeraldOnline.com reports that the South Carolina press conference came two days after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released new data, which showed that, on the national level, traffic fatalities dropped 14 percent from 2006 to 2010.
It was also reported that 70 percent of South Carolina's drunk driving fatalities were the result of accidents involving at least one driver with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.15 or more.
