According to a study conducted by 24-7 Wall Street based on 2012 data, South Carolina ranked as the third deadliest state in the nation when it came to drunk driving deaths. The study indicated that in 2012, 360 people were killed by drunk drivers in South Carolina. The study claims that there were 17,906 DUI arrests in South Carolina in 2012. The good news is that there was a decline in the number of car accident related fatalities for South Carolina in 2013. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, there were 229 fatal crashes in 2013. Unfortunately, South Carolina has already seen 217 fatal car accidents so far in 2014. However, not all of those accidents were DUI related. With almost eight months remaining in 2014 it is likely that we will see more car accident fatalities in the remainder of 2014.
Please stay safe while driving. Remember, it is against the law in South Carolina to drive while under the influence of alcohol to an extent that your ability to drive is materially and appreciably impaired. Also, keep in mind that causing an accident while in such a state can have serious consequences in a civil lawsuit for injuries or property damage that were caused. If you or someone you know has been injured in a car accident with someone that was driving under the influence you may be able to recover punitive damages against the at-fault driver for their gross negligence.
